I recently wrote about the album that best represents my daily life. It’s become important to me that I write about what I’m listening to because it’s one of the strongest ways I keep track of memories. Not always specific moments, but a period of time and the overall emotions connected with it. It’s as if each life transition, no matter how seemingly insignificant, I take interest in new music. I’d love to know more of the psychology behind this. In the meantime, I want to make a better effort to write about the music I listen to and how I associate them with life in my mind. Here's a couple songs I feel the need to write about. “Red Eyes” - The War On Drugs I haven't listened to this band much, but this song is amazing. I listen to it every night as I fall asleep, and every morning to wake me up. It's peaceful. It's the kind of song that at the end of the day go, “Everything will be fine.” and in the morning go, “Alright, it's time to get moving.” It's subtle, yet strong. For that reason it allows me to be still and direct my attention to the things that matter most in life. It redirects my attention, and centers my emotions all into a state of stillness. I need music like this to listen to in the morning and at night. It keeps me focused during the day. “Lazy Eye” - Silversun Pickups
While “Red Eyes” makes me feel at peace, this song makes me feel small - but in the best way possible. It's humbling, but I also find myself in awe of those I admire most and thankful for their being in my life. The first song directs my attention to what matters most, and this song reminds me of who matters most. They both give me a similar feeling, but in a strange way they're almost opposite. When I'm thinking about the “what” it can almost lead to self-centeredness. But this song, I feel, counterbalances that. Everyone has different taste so I think these songs will speak differently to others. But in the future, I want to remind myself of where I used to be and the process that I'm going through. I think music might be one of the best ways to do that.
