Week 4 At My Apprenticeship

I’m blown away at the fact that it’s already been a month since I’ve started the second half of the Praxis program. So far, my journey has taken off to a great start, and I’m excited to start planning for next month!

What I'm Learning.

One cool thing I learned at work this past week.

There’s a book I’ve been reading lately called “Smartcuts” and it’s literally about how to think like a hacker and/or innovator in every aspect of life. I had a moment at work this week where this clicked while learning to use a P Touch! If you know what a P Touch is, that sounds really stupid, but the connection I made from the book was more valuable than using the P Touch itself.

For context, I was asked to figure out how to print a label with three lines to print an address. Well, I Googled it, and I read that two lines are the limit. I tried to figure it out anyway, but nothing was working. I ended up just printing two different parts of the address on two different labels and then putting them together. That might be a silly example, but instead of getting frustrated I got creative, and I’m a bit proud about that.

One cool thing I learned outside of work this week.

I learned that there’s actually some debate over whether being trained by a mentor is helpful or not. Personally, I believe mentors are incredibly helpful, but I was completely unaware that others might disagree. Not that they’re ignorant, but that they actually believe having a mentor can negatively affect your performance. That being said, I learned it’s not having the mentor that counts, but in the method and approach from both sides.

How I'm Creating Value.

One example of how I created value.

I’ve started getting more online presence ready for the real estate team I’m working for by creating a Facebook page.

What project I’m currently working on.

Marketing plan ideas/organizing everything in our database/30 day photography challenge.

What I’m doing to become a better version of myself overall.

My tendency to be shy is starting to creep back into my mind as a regular habit and I’m being more conscious of that. There will be random moments where I feel the need to talk to someone just for the sake of getting out of my comfort zone and I will do it.

Praxis Wednesday Re-cap.

Topic & guest.

There was no “guest” this past Praxis Wednesday, but we got the opportunity to do breakout sessions and talk to each other about our current positions.

My favorite highlight.

After the main session, I got to have a one-on-one call with my advisor, Hannah, and talking to her helped me re-focus on having clear plans for the next few weeks.

That might be cheating since it was technically after the main call but I’m counting it anyway. :)

My biggest takeaway.

There are different sets of pros and cons of working with a startup vs. working with a bigger company. Since I am not working with a startup, my situation looks different than most of the other Praxians, but, I’m learning to take advantage of the different pros of my situation.

Though my current job isn’t ideal as a long-term career, it’s best to make sure I’m identifying what skills I can transfer over into my ideal career.

How I’m going to apply that takeaway to my life.

I’m going to spend some time and write out a list of all of the skills I can gain from my apprenticeship that can help me get to my dream job.
