The Band I Grew Up On

A lot of people like to make fun of Creed, they're always the center of everyone's jokes and they're not commonly respected, except by people like me. Neither of my parents are very musical, in fact, my Dad nearly hates music. My Mom sings as a hobby and she has a really great soprano voice, but other than that neither of them have ever slightly considered going into the music industry - which is ironic because all four of their children ended up being very musical. They've always been more the athletic type. My Dad was played baseball and basketball, my Mom played basketball and was also a dancer. Growing up, I didn't listen to much else other than Creed. I listened to them constantly, in fact, it would even be safe to say their music is the soundtrack to my childhood.
Inside the womb, surrounded by amniotic fluid, the fetus hears sounds. It hears the heartbeat of its mother, at times speeding up, at other times slowing down. And the fetus hears music, as was recently discovered by Alexandra Lamont of Keele University in the UK. She found that, a year after they are born, children recognize and prefer music they were exposed to in the womb. - Daniel J. Levitin, This Is Your Brain On Music

I was (literally) listening to Creed in the womb.

My parents started to listen to them when they were first dating and their love for this band grew as their love grew for each other. When my Mom discovered she was pregnant with me, the song With Arms Wide Open became a song that they could both relate to.

Well I just heard the news today.
It seems my life is gonna change.
I'll close my eyes, begin to pray.
Then tears of joy stream down my face.

With arms wide open under the sunlight.
Welcome to this place, I'll show you everything.
- With Arms Wide Open

I have to admit that whenever I'm feeling down or lonely (especially lonely) I immediately turn on Creed. Not only does it take me back to my memories as a child - the ones of driving to classes, the magical rainy days, and playing with my siblings - it reminds me of my parents. My parents have always been a solid and safe place for me to run to, I think this is a huge reason as to why I love Creed so much. They've always been a source of comfort in my mind, and Creed does a great job of displaying that musically.

I have a hunch that even twenty years from now I'll still be listening to Creed, they're a key band in my life I can't imagine reminiscing my childhood without their music popping up in my mind too.
