Real leaders don’t wait for others to follow. They don’t wait to get the “okay” from their peers or authorities, and they don’t sit around wishing to be respected. Real leaders first lead themselves, regardless if anyone follows. They respect themselves, giving a reason to later be respected. It’s not the followers that make them leaders, it’s their attitude and approach of life. It’s also possible to follow someone who isn’t leading. There’s some cases where people can be manipulated into thinking highly of someone who lacks dignity, self-control, or wisdom. There’s also some situations where people can be forced into taking orders from an authority, but neither force, orders, or authority itself makes someone a leader.
Here’s the thing, everyone follows someone or something. There’s really not much opportunity to do otherwise - that’s just how we function. We follow, no matter what, because we’re humans and that’s what we do best. So then if we follow, our main concern should be in regards to who or what we follow. We shouldn’t be too transfixed on who is following us.
