Once upon a time, there lived an young INFP named Trinity, who longed for a life full of adventure, mystery, and romance. She lived in a kingdom far, far away which the citizens of the land referred to as “Burbank, California."
(Alright, I apologize for the fairytale crap. Trust me, I'm not the type to get into that anyway.) However, it is a fitting way to introduce you to the INFP personality because us INFP’s are dreamers at heart.

“INFP personalities are true idealists, always looking for the hint of good in even the worst of people and events, searching for ways to make things better. While they may be perceived as calm, reserved, or even shy, INFPs have an inner flame and passion that can truly shine. Comprising just 4% of the population, the risk of feeling misunderstood is unfortunately high for the INFP personality type – but when they find like-minded people to spend their time with, the harmony they feel will be a fountain of joy and inspiration.” - 16 Personalities

#1 - We Love to Dream

The thing is, INFP’s view dreaming in a whole different light. “Dreaming” to the INFP holds a unique definition because while some may consider daydreaming a sign of laziness, we consider it a kind of virtue. We love to create, we love to uplift others, and spend lots of time in thought. Our imaginations drive us to the point where we honestly couldn’t imagine life another way. That’s the reason we’re often considered “childish”, but it’s just how we function.
#2 - We’re Goofy

Maybe we’re not all comedians, but we don’t care! Laughing is one of the best parts about life, so we like to enjoy it as much as we can.

“INFPs often have a strong appreciation for sarcasm and absurd humor. They have a skill for self-deprecating comedy that people absolutely love. They are often very funny individuals, to the people who can fully appreciate their off-beast sense of humor. They have a very unique wit that is best expressed around people they are comfortable with. Not everyone can enjoy the zany and sometimes ridiculous INFP humor, but honestly that is their loss. INFPs have a way of getting people laughing and not letting them stop. They enjoy the ability to bring others joy and humor is an excellent way to do that.” - Personalitygrowth.com

So if you’ve never seen my goofy side, I probably don’t like you. Yet.

#3 - We’re Natural Therapists

Because we spend a great deal of time thinking about the things we’re excited about, that also gives us strong determination to be committed to those things. When it comes to friends and family, we’re willing to do anything to support them. That’s why we’re considered “natural therapists”, and it’s the reason we love to help others. INFP’s are great at reading emotions, and our introversion allows us to provide a calm and comforting energy.

All three of these facts explain why we can be confusing to the world. We supposedly love to dream, be goofy, and help others, so why is it that we can come off as selfish or rude? I think the answer is because we need time to decide whether someone (or something) is worth investing into. It hurts worse when you pour lots of energy into supporting someone who never noticed, so INFP’s are very cautious who they open up to. But I’m sure most of us can relate to that - INFP or not. INFP’s also should be careful not to blow things out of proportion and let our imaginations run wild. It goes both ways.

Next time you talk to an INFP, stay true to who you are and they’ll most likely to detect and appreciate your honesty. Giving them the opportunity to reflect your transparent or warm personality will help them be more comfortable around you. Yes, warming up to INFP’s takes time (sorry), but I’d like to think we make pretty good friends. I can at least say with honesty that we do try our best.
